Requirement

The Bank's Exadatas had served the Bank well since their implementation in 2015. The Bank saw the replacement of the Exadatas as a strategic opportunity to understand whether continuing the Exadatas at the Bank was the right choice. Whatever the outcome, the solution had to be well known and established, the Bank would not entertain unproven solutions; high-performing and extremely resilient.

Due to this pending requirement, the Bank also decided in consultation with Corvus IT to have a broad review of their infrastructure and systems to understand where focus would benefit the Bank.

?

The Outcomes

The Bank was able to build a clear business case showing the cost comparison and benefits of each solution. The Dell Powerflex was the chosen infrastructure for the Bank, and the key reasons were:

  • An increase of local compute resiliency by 50% by increasing from 2 clustered nodes to 3 clustered nodes without impacting their Oracle licensing.
  • An improvement of storage resiliency to 99.9999% which exceeded their current infrastructure and represents the most resilience in any component within the Bank.
  • An increase to 600,000+ IOPS without compromising resilience or reliability.
  • A significantly lower 5-Year Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) comparison at 52% of the equivalent Exadata.
  • A higher utilisation of what was purchased. The Exadata is limited in BoM options and had too much valuable infrastructure that is fully paid for but not utilised. This also contributes to the stark difference in the 5-Year TCO.
  • The ability to cater for other Oracle workloads such as WebLogic and Standard Edition Database, as well as non-Oracle workloads such as Microsoft SQL Server and other technologies. This has led to the Dell Powerflex being the centrepiece for the Bank's strategic direction so that many different workloads can benefit from its resiliency and performance.

This was confirmed with hands-on demonstrations of Dell PowerFlex with Dell in Sydney, and similar transition stories shared that gave BPNG the confidence required that it was developing a beneficial relationship with a global vendor that would genuinely partner with both  Corvus IT and BPNG to ensure customer success.

The PowerFlex has proven to be extremely successful at the Bank and this has led to moving into subsequent execution of IT strategies to consolidate infrastructure and workloads.
