An Australian software vendor determined a strategic direction of moving their offer from on-premise private-cloud deployments of Oracle Database & WebLogic to operate on a Public Cloud

?Why did they engage Corvus IT ?

After a brief explanation of their strategic direction, we quickly presented to the client an approach that would allow a phased approach of migrating clients from in-house installations to a SAAS offering on AWS that allowed the vendor to use the agility and scale of AWS. Our experience in configuring WebLogic and migrating Oracle workloads to AWS in a cost-effective yet collaborative manner was the key to engaging Corvus IT.

?The Process

There was multiple teams to engage with multiple teams which meant that there were different challenges to solve across the different teams depending upon their focus from R+D through to Customer Support.

Further consultation was initially required to work through several options that were presented to them, all with their own pros and cons. In the end, the option was chosen that gave them the most flexibility in migrating existing customers from the current base of private cloud. Being a software vendor that developed their own solution, they were intimate in WebLogic and the Oracle database, Corvus IT's role was to ensure that the Oracle software was deployed in a manner that was both compliant and efficient in AWS. Another key requirement was to cater for significant growth which was a significant driver in migrating from the private cloud current deployment whose design could not cater for the growth that was expected.

We mutually agreed the preferred architecture after consultation with multiple teams. We established the AWS environment and worked with the client on a migration of an environment destined to be a Development environment. The project was a very 'stop and start affair' by design for Corvus IT to allow the client's personnel to learn and gain skills during the project. This engagement was not about Corvus IT performing a set of tasks and moving on, it was about enabling the client to understand and successfully migrate clients and operate for its customers. Our flexible approach was key to allowing this to happen, with BAU occupying the majority of time for existing client resources, Corvus IT provided the additional skills in AWS and provided the expertise to ensure the configuration and architecture on AWS was optimised for the requirements given.

When the client was satisfied that the AWS solution was ready, Corvus IT performed the initial client migrations with resources from the client getting more involved and hence more capable until they could take full responsibility themselves.

?The Outcomes

This was not a normal engagement for the client nor Corvus IT. Working together, we achieved a high-quality solution on AWS that the client's personnel were ultimately able to manage themselves. The goals of many Service Providers would be to 'own' the solution and play a key role in the ongoing running of the system. However, this is the core business of the client and Corvus IT understood this from the outset and didn't overstep that mark. Client personnel running migrations, performing software updates, doing AWS administration all occurred over time, and as the client's capabilities increased in these areas, Corvus IT's responsibilities decreased.

We believe that this engagement is a testament to the flexibility in our engagement model and the partnering approach we take to joint success. As for the client, they now have migrated from their private cloud and have migrated many existing on-premise customers to their new high-performing SAAS offering.
